Obama Administration Sending More GITMO Detainees to Yemen (Update: Too Late)

In Obama, Terrorist on December 30, 2009 at 12:18 pm

In spite of recent public awareness regarding lax anti-terror policies, the Obama administration is moving forward with plans to transfer six Guantanamo Bay detainees to Yemen.

Senators Graham, McCain and Lieberman have called on President Obama to halt the transfer in light of Yemen’s links to the attempted Christmas Day Northwest Airlines bombing. Even Dianne Feinstein (D-Cali) can’t support this plan:

“Guantanamo detainees should not be released to Yemen at this time,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said in a statement. “It is too unstable.”

The administration’s response, courtesy Politico:

HONOLULU — A senior Obama administration official pushed back against critics of the White House’s plans to transfer some detainees at Guantanamo Bay to Yemen as it moves toward closing the facility, saying the process for transfers are “consistent with our national security interests.”

The official explained that the administration’s policy requires that Congress be notified of any transfers, that they are “consistent with our national security interest,” and that each case is reviewed “with a fine-toothed comb.”

I wonder if that’s the same comb that was used to screen the underpants bomber, Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab. Because, if it’s that comb, we know that it has already let through a lack of passport, a warning from the terrorist’s father and a name on a watch list. I don’t place a lot of faith in that comb.

In that same statement, the unnamed administration official made an interesting choice of words while addressing past transfers of GITMO alumni:

“I am aware of a lot of people pointing back at the way the transfers were handled under the Bush administration that apparently they have some concerns about that,” said the official, who had not seen the senators’ letter. “I didn’t hear many of those concerns at the time, but there were obviously hundreds and hundreds of detainees that were transferred under the old regime.”

We’re using the word ‘regime’ in White House statements to refer to U.S. leaders? Ed Morrissey (I like that guy more every day) at Hot Air:

Regime?  We don’t have regimes in the US — or we didn’t until now.  Is the Obama White House comfortable with calling themselves the present “regime”?

And for the record, some of us had serious misgivings about sending Gitmo detainees to Yemen.  In fact, some of us were warning about it as far back as 2005.  Maybe Obama was too busy running for his next office to notice.

As I said before, words have an exact meaning.

Update, Allahpundit:

You’ll be pleased to know that the six detainees whom McCain and Graham wrote to Obama about yesterday were actually returned to Yemen two weeks ago, right around the same time that the military was preparing the December 17 airstrike there on The One’s orders. Why he and Bush ever thought it was smart thinkin’ to repatriate people to a country where Al Qaeda has operated openly for years is unfathomable to me

Maybe they had the detainee’s dropped off at the site of the planned air-strike…
